Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 16:28:03 GMT

By Elissa Garay | CNNThe road trip-meets-camping experience afforded by camper van travel is having a moment.Interest in these compact recreational vehicles, typically outfitted with home-away-from-home comforts like sleeping spaces and kitchenettes, has surged in recent years, bolstered by social media streams flooded with images and videos depicting idealized, nature-immersive #vanlife travel scenes.Plus, at the pandemic’s height, such self-contained vans – a sort of hotel room on wheels – were perceived to offer a means of travel that cut away at health risks.Yet, for the nature-loving travelers who tend to gravitate toward these outdoor adventure-ready vans, there’s a crisis of conscience at play, given that the oversize, gas-guzzling vehicles are known for spewing out carbon emissions, as a worsening global climate crisis unfolds.Just as movement toward electric vehicles (EVs) has swept the automobile industry—with fossil fuel-powered internal combustion engines being increasin...

Leaving California: Which state ‘culture’ is your best alternative?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 16:28:03 GMT

California appears to be a loser in the culture wars when it comes to interstate migration flows.Folks who talk about leaving the Golden State – or actually depart – say they no longer feel comfortable living in a state that’s dominated by big-city progressive thinking. So as a public service – and to show an economic lesson or two – this edition of my “Leaving California” columns will guide those people thinking about relocating to a place where the “culture” may be a better fit. Now, nothing can be harder to quantify than a fuzzy concept encompassing somebody’s philosophies of life. So, I’m going to skip the emotions and instead use seven benchmarks to gauge the cultural divide among the states. For departing Californians who don’t need any detailed analysis – my trusty spreadsheet says your No. 1 alternative is South Dakota. If that’s not to your liking, then head to North Dakota, Tennessee, Oklahoma or Idaho. And to avoid a really bad fit, do not go to New York, Connecticut, New Jer...

Musk threatens to sue researchers who documented the rise in hateful tweets

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 16:28:03 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has threatened to sue a group of independent researchers whose research documented an increase in hate speech on the site since it was purchased last year by Elon Musk.An attorney representing the social media site wrote to the Center for Countering Digital Hate on July 20 threatening legal action over the nonprofit’s research into hate speech and content moderation. WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden’s former business partner appeared Monday for closed-door testimony on Capitol Hill, with Republicans planning to question him about claims that President Joe Biden was directly involved in his younger son’s financial dealings. The Republican-led House Oversight Committee was conducting a transcribed interview with Devon Archer as part of its expanding congressional inquiry into the Biden family businesses as the GOP explores a potential impeachment inquiry into the president. Archer, who served with Hunter Biden on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, has been seen by Republicans as a key witness in their so-far fruitless search to directly connect the president to his son’s various international business transactions. Rep. James Comer, the GOP chairman of Oversight Committee, issued a subpoena to Archer in June, saying he “played a significant role in the Biden family’s business deals abroad, including but not limited to ...
