Orioles clinch 1st AL East title since 2014, reach 100 wins with 2-0 victory over Red Sox Dean Kremer’s arrival six years ago signaled the beginning of the Orioles’ rebuild. His performance Thursday night helped deliver the club’s biggest win since.Behind the calm Kremer, the Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox, 2-0, to win their 100th game of the season and clinch the franchise’s first American League East title since 2014. In the most important start of his life, Kremer pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, needing only Anthony Santander’s solo home run in the first and a steady bullpen behind him for the victory. As the tight game neared an end, the 27,543 fans at Camden Yards grew progressively more animated. When Tyler Wells recorded the final out, they made the park shake in a way it rarely has the past six years. The last time the Orioles won 100 games was in 1980. The division title is just their third in the past 40 seasons. Baltimore will enter the postseason as the AL’s top team, earning a bye in the wild-card round and home-...

Despite Sale’s gem, Orioles shutout Red Sox to win AL East

Despite Sale’s gem, Orioles shutout Red Sox to win AL East In his final start of the year, Chris Sale looked like his old self.In fact, he’s looked more like the Chris Sale of yore quite a bit recently, going at least five innings and allowing no more than one earned run in four of his last five starts; he finished September with a 2.88 ERA for the month.“It was nice,” Sale told reporters. “Still wasn’t enough.”Unfortunately, the southpaw’s efforts were for naught. Just after 9 p.m, the Orioles won 2-0 and Camden Yards became the home of the new champions of the American League East.Hours after Alex Cora announced that Sale was his intended Opening Day starter for the 2024 season, the 34-year-old left-hander pitched five innings against the Orioles, a team he used to dominate, but has struggled against this year.Save for a solo home run to Anthony Santander, the Orioles got nothing off Sale. He held them to three hits, walked one, and struck out two.“My hope is for him to be the Opening Day starter,”...

Column: Bullpen collapses in the midst of a playoff race are nothing new for the Chicago Cubs — and their fans There’s nothing quite as difficult to overcome as a bullpen implosion in a pennant race, as the Chicago Cubs appear intent on proving again. From Phil Regan to LaTroy Hawkins to Craig Kimbrel, Cubs relievers have left their mark on late-season collapses. This September’s fade has been a collective effort, and with three games remaining after Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Braves, they’re banking on the return of closer Adbert Alzolay to save the day.The Cubs entered the series finale with a major-league leading 10 blown saves in 15 opportunities in September after blowing one-run leads in the final three innings of Wednesday’s 6-5 loss. With Marcus Stroman making only his second start Thursday since his return from hip and rib injuries, the challenge for manager David Ross to safeguard the final innings was magnified.“Is that a challenge?” Ross asked Thursday afternoon. “You try to put the guys in there you trust and feel lik...

Orioles win AL East, exceeding expectations with unique blend of stars, survivors and castoffs The Orioles entered 2023 with high expectations for themselves but few beyond the clubhouse believed they were capable of what they achieved Thursday.A team of rising young stars, rebuild survivors, castoffs and veterans blended together in harmony across the past six months to win the American League East on the night the ballclub also signed a new 30-year lease to keep the Orioles in Baltimore.Even the team’s general manager was skeptical of this possibility, saying in December it would be “really hard to sit there and chart a course” for Baltimore to be the favorite of the daunting division. But Mike Elias did not completely dismiss it, noting “young teams pop all the time.”Well, they popped, and so have bottles of champagne. The Orioles won the AL East, a division considered baseball’s best, for the first time since 2014 with Thursday’s 2-0 victory against the Boston Red Sox in front of an energized crowd of 27,543 at Camden Yards...
